Everyone has an opinion on which water is the best, but fact and fiction can often get mixed up when information gets thrown around. For example, a common question we receive at Paradise Bottled Water is: “Does distilled water hydrate you?” Today, we are going to share with you the facts about distilled water, the myths you can kick to the curb, and the answer to this common question.
What is Distilled Water?
To put it simply, distilled water is produced by boiling water to generate steam. That steam is then cooled and returned to its liquid state.
Unlike other types of water, including tap water, filtered water, spring water, mineral water, or even purified water, the process of making distilled water removes 99% of impurities. This includes minerals, bacteria, and inorganic chemicals. Overall, it is considered the purest water available.
The ultimate thing to know about distilled water is that it is safe and healthy to drink.
Common Myths About Distilled Water
There have been a variety of myths floating around about distilled water. Let’s take a moment to disprove them.
Myth #1: Distilled water pulls minerals from your body
False! While distilled water has had minerals removed from its composition, that does not mean it pulls minerals from the body.
It simply does not add minerals to the body as other types of water can. This is not a concern, as the minerals that do come with other forms of drinking water are so minute. In reality, most minerals required for a healthy body come from the food we consume. As long as you are eating a healthy diet, your mineral requirements are already met.
Myth #2: Distilled water causes an electrolyte imbalance
False! As noted above, as long as you eat a healthy diet, you have everything you need to maintain a balanced body.
What about intense exercise or fasting? If you are sweating profusely or completing a long-term fast, you may need to supplement with an electrolyte replenisher or sports drink, but that applies to all types of water. In these cases, tap or mineral water alone would also not be sufficient to achieve a healthy balance.
Myth #3: Distilled water is unhealthy to consume consistently
False! You can drink distilled water every day; there is no credible evidence to the contrary.
Again, as long as you are eating a healthy diet, your body is getting all of the minerals it needs. Therefore, distilled water will provide you with the hydration you need on a daily basis.
Does Distilled Water Hydrate You?
Does distilled water hydrate you? Yes!
Distilled water hydrates the body just like any other type of water; it circulates through your blood, nourishes your cells, lubricates your joints, and supports your organs. Unlike other types of water, distilled water also comes with the added bonus of being contamination-free.
Why does this matter? Not everyone has access to safe, clean drinking water.
Distilled water is highly recommended for those living in an area where local tap water may be compromised (polluted) or contain a high content of heavy metals. Additionally, individuals with compromised immune systems, allergies, or sensitivities to chlorine, fluoride, or other additives commonly found in public water sources benefit from having pure drinking water they can trust.
In addition to that, the use of distilled water is recommended for those who need the purest of water for:
- Infant formula
- CPAP machines
- Neti Pots
- Ironing
- Personal hygiene
- Medical requirements
When Wouldn’t I Want Distilled Water?
The only real downside to distilled water is its lack of flavor. That’s because the “flavor” we are used to when we drink water comes from the minerals present within it. Distilled water strips all of those minerals away, which can leave the “flavor” as bland, flat, or utterly tasteless. If you enjoy the flavor of local water and have safe drinking water, this may not be the best daily option for you.
If that is the case, you would likely be better off utilizing purified water instead.
