When it comes to your family or business’s drinking water, you want nothing short of high-quality. Unfortunately, recent water testing by the City of Kennewick has demonstrated higher levels of PFAs in our local drinking water. In addition, various localized and national reports have found contaminated drinking water available to the public, meaning it is coming through our tap water. To prevent potential illness, clean water is essential!
How does one get clean water? The two most common purification methods are reverse osmosis and distillation. Many people confuse purified and distilled water, or assume they’re the same, this article will clarify the differences!
What is Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water?
Reverse osmosis is a water filtration process designed to remove basic contaminants and impurities from water. It works by using pressure to force water through a membrane that blocks contaminants such as salts, heavy metals, and chemicals. For example, it has been shown that reverse osmosis can remove over 99% of benzene, cesium, chlorine, lead, mercury, and rust in addition to partial removal of algae, arsenic, copper, fluoride, and various bacteria.
At Paradise Bottled Water, our purified water utilizes reverse osmosis processing. However, it first goes through three more purification steps, including carbon filtration, water softening, and particulate filtration to maximize the purification process.

What is Distilled Water?
Distilled water is the highest level of purification available for water. It works by boiling water at 218°F, collecting the steam, and cooling it to a liquid form. This process removes 99%+ of all impurities, including minerals, heavy metals, bacteria, and volatile organic compounds.
At Paradise Bottled Water, our distilled water is put through a rigorous purification process. It goes through our distiller, our water softener, and our carbon filter before going through our reverse osmosis process. After, it goes through a UV light for added sterilization, and then it is sent to our distiller to be boiled.

Which is Better for Me: Purified or Distilled Water?
When determining whether purified or distilled water is better for you, it is vital to consider these three factors:
#1: Purity
In terms of purity, water that has been through the reverse osmosis process has typically had 90-99% of contaminants removed. Due to this, purified water is considered to be safe to drink for the majority of individuals. However, it is essential to keep in mind that purified water primarily removes large particles, but isn’t as effective against bacteria and viruses.
On the other hand, distilled water has had 99%+ of contaminants removed. Additionally, the heat involved in the boiling process kills nearly all bacteria and viruses. Therefore, when speaking of purity, distilled water is the purest available water.
#2: Taste
When regarding flavor, both purified and distilled water shine. Purified water, since it has removed the majority of contaminants that can make water smell or taste bad, especially chlorine, is considered to have a much better taste than tap water.
Alternatively, since distilled water is completely pure, it gets mixed reviews on taste. Remember that most people are used to having some flavor in their water due to the various minerals that naturally occur in it. However, when everything has been removed, it leaves it tasting completely clean. For some, this clean flavor is refreshing, whereas others consider it to be flat. This is entirely up to preference.
#3: Use
Lastly, when determining whether purified or distilled water is right for you, it is important to consider how you plan to use it. Suppose you are solely using your water for everyday hydration, cooking, or office water dispensers. In that case, purified water is considered an ideal option if you’re looking for everyday hydration with excellent taste and strong purification.
However, distilled water would be the better option if you are using water for medical devices, sensitive equipment, or because you have highly controlled dietary needs (like a weakened immune system).
